There are an estimated 10 to 10.5 million NGOs in the world [Reference]. Some operate in conflict zones and some in underdeveloped villages. Some are international organizations while others are regional. Some focus on combating epidemics while some help differently abled people. Each one of them is driving a change. And one of them is Hidden Voices, an NGO based in India.
Hidden Voices was founded on April 28th, 2019 [Reference] to provide assistance and support to the visually impaired. It began as a non-governmental organization that primarily distributed audiobooks before expanding its efforts into rehabilitation and inclusion. Since then, Hidden Voices has grown not just in numbers but also in its impact. Their efforts have enabled over 5000 readers to collaborate and read over 4000 books in multiple languages that have been distributed to over 350,000 people. That is a lot of zeroes!
At the core of its audiobook mission is its aim to bring old stories to new ears. Stories are read all across the world. Yet for some, even a luxury like stories is a distant dream. But Hidden Voices brought that dream to reality. Volunteers operate on a highly organized process to identify the book that is to be distributed, validate the PDF, divide the PDF, then record the readings, get it quality checked, uploaded in a drive and then finally compile the recordings and send it out for distribution.
But their mission has not stopped there. They have identified that audiobooks only provide short-term support while empowerment can leave a lasting impact. Hence, they began providing tutoring and academic support to visually impaired students with the aim of ensuring every child has an equitable opportunity to achieve success.
Hidden Voices also helps visually impaired individuals by scribing to ensure they too can attempt examinations. They also have language development programmes to help them enhance their communication and literary skills. The organization also has multiple empowerment programmes that build social skills and promote independence.
I have been a reader at Hidden Voices for over 2 years, and they have given me an opportunity to make a difference. I am truly in awe of their altruistic efforts and their organized approach.
At Hidden Voices, every volunteer believes that a person should never be defined by a disability. It aims to move beyond sympathy and rather towards opportunity, inclusion, accessibility and equal participation.
Hidden Voices’ journey has been one with ups and downs, but they have ensured to remain determined and succeed in their mission. Many NGOs do not get the recognition they deserve yet they continue to work behind the scenes and make a difference, just like Hidden Voices. They have not just focused on providing support in one area, but they have expanded their efforts to help students and adults in an effort to ensure equity and support.
Mother Teresa once said, “If you can’t feed a hundred people, then feed just one.” Hidden Voices is leading a revolution to make the world more accessible to the visually impaired. One step at a time.
