Today marks India’s 80th Independence Day. It is a day of pride and joy for many Indians. But this day is much bigger than the celebrations at the Red Fort. No! Instead it is a day that unites a billion hearts, varied in beliefs but united in choice. India may not be the perfect country on Earth. But again, is there really a perfect country. India is its people and it has achieved great heights in various aspects. So here’s a poem celebrating what India has become after 79 years of independence.

On an August day rose a nation,
Dreams fulfilled for a population.
The advent of a national permutation.
The fruit of blood and sweat,
The end of 200 years of oppression,
The beginning of years of independence.
A haven for talent to groom,
The buds of hard work bloom,
Different from the rest amidst every gloom.
On an August day rose a nation,
Varied in voices,
United in choices.
The land is golden,
The seas are endless,
Its bounty yet to be discovered.
No national language,
A diverse cultural package,
A nation gaining its vantage.
Religions and beliefs under one sky,
Innovation with heights to fly,
Achievements a mountain high.
Change might seem a far call,
But over a billion is nothing small,
A developing nation hears their call.
