Review of The UnteachablesThis Summer, its all about enjoying, cutting loose and book reviews. To be free and do what you want and like to do. So this Summer, I chose to read yet another Gordon Korman book. Having read Restart by the same author before, I had high expectations of Korman’s Schooled. But I was quite disappointed and now I am back with a review of Korman’s Unteachables book, another book, set in a school environment. So if you want to know more, just scroll down and dive in…

‘The Unteachables’ was a story of the underdogs rising and gaining redemption, a tale of the rise of those thrown away or looked down at. The curtains open with Mr. Kermit, a teacher who is awaiting one more school year to pass until he can apply for early retirement. Once an acclaimed and spirited teacher with a fire to change his young minds, his high-flying career takes a wrong turn as he is involved in a cheating scandal which was not his fault at all.

The Unteachables : Korman blurbHe is broken and his personal life too is destroyed thus, he loses his prowess and teaching spirit. Now he becomes nothing more than a caffeine-addicted teacher who does crosswords while his class does what they want on their accord. But the then principal, Dr. Thaddeus is now back as a superintendent who detests Mr. Kermit and cannot wait to destroy Kermit’s chances  of applying for early retirement. So he assigns Mr. Kermit SCS-8 (Self-Contained Students- Class 8) which is a polite way to call the students Unteachables. Discards from the school society, these students have been given a classroom away from the rest where they can go complete bonkers and often drive teachers up the wall.

With Kermit being assigned this class, Dr. Thaddeus cannot wait to see Mr. Kermit resign and ruin his early retirement. But hark. In enters Kiana Roubini, a temporary student from California who is enrolled at the school, Greenwich Middle School and ironically never formally registered. After then somehow finding her way into SCS-8 , she becomes a part of the class’ routine, and Mr. Kermit who is lost in the world of coffee and crosswords does not notice the extra student.

Now you might be asking questions. What happens next? What do these students do? Do Mr. Kermit truck through the year or is there a twist in the tale? Well, these were the questions that were bellowing in my head as well. But guess what. Just like me, you can go through the book and dive into its thrill to answer all your questions. What follows is a tale of rise, revenge, redemption and self-belief. If you seem hooked to the plot, surely read the book to enjoy this thrilling tale.

This book surely gives Restart a run for its money as my favourite Korman book. But nevertheless, I enjoyed the book thoroughly. Though, I felt lost at the beginning but the climax and resolution was surely entertaining and is quite an amazing read for the Summer. But again, I wish the book would have had a longer ending describing the later effects as well to complement the well-written resolution.

For me, I would rate this book a 4/5 with room for improvement. But at the same time, it is a worthwhile read for the holidays. But at the same time, this book really depends on your taste, but you will never know about the book and its essence until you read it.
