Fireworks and parades were galore, but this National Day celebrated not just the union of the seven emirates but rather the achievements of the country. Today, the UAE stands as a testament to the power of unity and innovation. It is not only home to over 190 nationalities. It has achieved remarkable feats from building the world’s tallest building to the expansion renewable energy projects across several continents through Masdar, this country nestled in the Middle East truly has dared it all. 

But these feats were possible because of the Emirati values of unity and innovation. Every emirate too has played its part to contribute to the nation it is today. From Abu Dhabi’s vast oil reserves and expertise to Sharjah’s cultural forums, UAE is now a global hub for business, tourism and knowledge. But the United Arab Emirates has taken many other significant strides in diverse sectors including space research, sport and even Artificial Intelligence.

The United Arab Emirates has played an active role in space exploration among Arab nations. It sent the HOPE probe to Mars in 2021, becoming one of the nine countries to explore the planet. It has also successfully sent two Emirati astronauts to the International Space Station, affirming the nations’ keen interest in space exploration. But its exploration journey does not end here. The UAE has proudly launched the MBZ-SAT and also plans to launch the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt, a 7-year voyage which aims to unveil the secrets of the Asteroid belt. These initiatives showcase that the sky is not the limit for the UAE.

The UN Secretary General, António Guterres quoted, “Technology must be our servant, not our master”. This highlighted the relevance on technology in our evolving world and its pivotal role in modernization. And the UAE took the stride to make the difference. It has inculcated AI into the education curricula with 97% of people in the UAE adapting AI for seamless operation. The United Arab Emirates was also one of the first countries to introduce 5G networks and is actively researching 6G networks as well.

In fact, Abu Dhabi is now globally ranked as the city with the fastest internet connection. But its advancements do not end here. In a mind-blowing achievement, Dubai became the first city in the world to have a 3D printed building. It further aims to ensure that 25 per cent of buildings in Dubai are based on 3D printing technology by 2030. 

Further innovations in the country include the establishment of renewable energy parks like the Sheikh Maktoum Solar Park and Noor Abu Dhabi. The United Arab Emirates also aims to lead the way in the global goal of sustainability with smart cities like Masdar city serving as a global hub for research and innovation. The country is also adopting modular construction techniques and is fostering a thriving start-up ecosystem with incubators and accelerators like Hub71 in Abu Dhabi.

With conflict-preparedness in mind and a hunger to climb higher, The country launched the UAE Centennial Plan 2071 which is a long-term, full-vision plan that extends for 5 decades after 2021. It forms a clear map for the long-term government work, to fortify the country’s reputation and its soft power. The plan aims at investing in the future generations, by preparing them with the skills and knowledge needed to face rapid changes and to make the UAE, the best country in the world by the next centennial in 2071.

From its hosting of COP28 to its success at the Olympics, the UAE is pushing the limits and paving the path for the future. It is not just a country; it is a global hub leading the way by driving innovation fuelled by curiosity.  So, as we raise flags and celebrate the UAE’s 54 years of unity and ambition, let us learn from its initiatives and goals while honouring the past, embracing the future and stepping boldly into the future.
