Mesmerising Western Ghats
Mesmerising Western Ghats. It was summer vacations. We had come to India to enjoy the two-month long holidays. During July and August, my native place gets heavy downpour. But right now that is not where I was. We were on our way to Bangalore. Everyone was quiet in the car as if a cat had got their tongues. We entered the ghat section. This was a totally new terrain for me, as I live in the coastal region of Mangalore.
I had been through this ghat a lot of times when I was a baby. But now I do not remember anything. At first all I could see were rocks and lots of them. But I spoke too soon. I started looking around like a fly on the wall. Soon enough, I could hear water gurgling nearby. Then, Oh My!! There stood a mighty waterfall. As we drove on the swerving roads, I could see the beautiful and mesmerizing scenes of big mountains, small streams, tall trees, and white clouds which were turning black. Gosh!! They looked pretty angry.
And before you could say “Ghats are wonderful” Pitter, Patter, Pitter, Patter!!! It started raining cats and dogs. I was gloomy then because we could not have anymore stops to look at the view the ghats presented to me.Moreover, I am a dendrophile who loves being out with nature. But I did not let it get the better of me.
Just then, Choo!! Choo!! A train rumbled past on a nearby railroad through the mountains. Then I saw a small stream and in it was an uprooted coconut tree which got uprooted when there was a landslide. I felt bad for the tree. Then we saw a troop of monkeys.
We gave them bananas to savour. They had a hearty meal. But they were greedy for more. As the car engine roared back to life. The monkeys ran after our car. But we were too fast for them, and they retreated. As we reached to the very end of the ghat, I thought. Phew!! It was not so bad after all.
My legs started getting achy after the long drive and I wanted to stretch my legs. But I was sad to know we are not yet halfway to Bangalore. The ghats section was just as splendid as my parents described. All the greenery and serenity made it a memorable drive. I wish to come back here again, but on a sunny day.
