Last Bear by Hannah Gold

Hannah Gold’s debut novel was an absolute thriller and personally, it touched my heart greatly as it narrated the tale of Bear and April Woods and April pulling off a daring but epic rescue of Bear. But the book was simply so enthralling that it was quite heartbreaking to see the end of the book on the last page.
And ever since then I have been on the lookout if there ever would be a sequel to the Last Bear. And in 2023, Finding Bear or often called Last Bear #2 was released and I could not wait to get my hands on it. And soon enough I got it in my school’s library. So, here is a review on the book” Finding Bear” and my thoughts on the book
April Woods often called Bear Girl by her classmates finds that befriending polar bears is much easier than to befriend a human. Ever since spreading awareness of the conditions of the Arctic to her classmates, her life has never been the same and that often leads her to sit outside even on chilly days as she pondered about what Bear was doing. Though she is thousands of kilometers away from Bear, it does not stop her from recycling and saving the earth with all her might.
But disaster strikes as Tör, one of her Arctic friend reports there was an incident in Svalbard where a tourist shot a bear. April’s instincts tell her that this has to be her Bear and after die hard persuasion, her dad agrees to have a search in Svalbard.
As she arrives in Svalbard she realizes the worsening plight of Svalbard and after few days: Tör, her dad, herself and an artic guide after a misfortunate event as an arctic storm separates her from the rest of the group, she tries to wait for them to rescue her but soon she finds herself face to face with a polar bear.
And it’s not just any bear but it is her bear. As Bear takes her to his cave where she realizes Bear has had a cub which she has named Peanut. But tragically his mate has passed away and that leaves bear having to look after his cub, something which no male bear has experienced.
What happens next is truly thrilling as April embarks on a mission to protect bear’s cub and do her best to ensure it will not die in the unforgiving climate of Svalbard. Read the book to know more about this fantastic adventure.

I found this book quite enjoyable and enthralling. It was surely worthwhile and had an amazing set-up around the plot of the previous book ‘Last Bear’. It is of course no secret that the book was a best seller within hours of its release especially after it succeeded ‘Last Bear’, winner of the prestigious Blue Peter Book Award and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize in 2022.
Credits to Levi Pinfold, the illustrator of this marvellous book which would not have the same appeal without its creative illustrations.
All in all this book was amazing and would engage any reader from the age 10 to 65 years old as well. It is definitely a 4.5 on 5.

However the adventure is not over yet, as Hannah Gold has written yet another nature novel called Turtle Moon. And hopefully I might be able to write a review on the book after I have read it. But till then remember by spreading awareness and preserving nature we can make the earth a better place to live. Remember like April Wood said,”“But just imagine if every single person on the planet did one thing?” Well now that I think of it the world would be much better, all it needs is for everyone to do their part.
